Formerly an errant knight, Sir Stephen was engaged to Larkin Edalfas, a daughter of a magistrate in Erusmea. He went on a quest to find the shroud of Salun, in order to obtain a fiefdom. Unbenownst to Stephen, this quest was simply a manipulation so that the Lord-Regent’s son could use Stephen to find the shroud, and gain fame.
Stephen joined Orden and Gavin to hunt down the remaining artifacts of Salun, but in the process, when Gavin decided to reclaim his soul at the cost of destroying the University of Magi, and everyone at the University, Sir Maddux gave up his agreement, and left behind his sword as an oath that if he were to ever find Gavin, he would slay him.
He left behind his sword, instead, taking up a mysterious black short sword, with a companion looming in his shadow. This devil, the nameless one, was once the soul of a powerful warrior, who was corrupted by foul magics in the era of Karn. A sergeant of Karn, the Nameless one was well known for slaying devils, until one day, he entered the abyss, and made a pact with a creature that possessed him. It tore off one of its horns, and made it into a shortsword, of foul make, and for centuries, other men became corrupted by the weapon, acting as so called ‘Dirges’ strange men that acted on their own accord.
When Stephen returned to Court, he found the Lord-Regent dead. His uncle and aunt, were beheaded, and their estate given up to a noble. Larkin’s father, disgusted, as he was framed for treason, gave up the betrothal to his daughter. Stephen, was left without the remains of his family, and future.
It was then, in Stephen’s darkest hour, when he came to visit the small site that his family was buried, that the Nameless One appeared to him. He wept, and the creature placed a clawed hand on his shoulder, and offered Stephen a choice. He was left with nothing, and he pledged to slay whomever the Nameless One wanted – in particular, angels.
Stephen agreed, and made a pact with the devil, and gave up his soul. What was left behind was a dark, shell of a knight, wielding a weapon of the abyss. With the nameless one now making Stephen the new Dirge, he would travel to the Void, where he fought angels, and prayed one day he could come upon Gavin. His motives for what he would do with Gavin, however, are unknown.
Stephen is soulless. He can travel between the Void, and Abyss as if acting with the teleportation spell.
Stephen is immune to lightning, and fire. He is an extraplanar creature.
